Description of Civil Engineering major
What is civil engineering? Civil engineering
is a field of science that studies the planning/design, manufacturing,
management/management, and conservation of various facilities and systems to
support a city, rural, and urban area. This means that a civil engineering
graduate needs to master knowledge related to design (when designing),
construction (when developing and compiling a management system), to
environmental maintenance (when looking at the impact of development from
various aspects).
The types of buildings referred to here
include many things, such as office buildings, bridges, roads, airports,
stations, housing complexes, and various other public facilities. Therefore,
the choice of research topics is also very diverse, such as bridges and
riverbanks/seasides, road design, technology to protect humans from disasters
such as; floods and earthquakes, as well as environmental conservation in an
area.
This engineering study program is a study
program that has many enthusiasts in Indonesia because many of its graduates
can produce great works in the form of magnificent and sturdy buildings.
Students who take this major are sometimes equated with Architecture Study
Program or Urban and Regional Planning Engineering. These three programs are
different. However, in the world of work, these three study programs are
interrelated. This can be exemplified if the three study programs are placed in
a development project, Urban and Regional Planning Engineering will design the
infrastructure required by an area and test services based on social and
economic conditions. Then, the plan will be transferred to the Architect who is
in charge of designing the building design according to function and
aesthetics. Until finally, it was Civil Engineering who translated the design
technically and then executed it in the field. So, while studying at the Civil
Engineering Department, you will learn from building design drawings,
calculating the strength of building structures, foundations, soil structures,
water structures, marine, and coastal characteristics, transportation, traffic,
cost calculations, project planning, and so on. The focus of studies offered by
the Civil Engineering department includes; Geotechnical, Building Structure,
Hydro (Water), Transportation, Environment, etc. The focus of this study also
depends on the College where you study.
As an illustration, some of the courses that
we can meet in the Civil Engineering department include; Building Drawings and
Structures, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, Transportation Engineering, Highway
Geometry, Steel Structures, Reinforced Concrete Structures, Airports, Seaports,
Heavy Equipment Management, Irrigation, and Waterworks Engineering, Engineering
Geology, Soil Surveying, etc.
We will take all these courses for 4 years or
8 semesters. And if we have completed education in the Department of Civil
Engineering, we will get a Bachelor of Engineering or abbreviated as S.T.
Competencies expected from a Bachelor of Engineering are able to design,
implement, and supervise the development process by considering various aspects
(economics, safety, occupational health, sustainability, and the environment).
Skills to be Learned from the Civil
Engineering Department
• Apart from knowledge, you
will also learn some important transferable skills. These skills will make
your career easier in the future, even if you don't work in civil engineering:
• Technical skills: a strong foundation in
mathematics and physics enables civil engineering graduates to have a good
understanding of the technical side of construction. Expertise in numbers and
numeracy make civil engineering graduates an attractive workforce in many
fields.
• Problem-solving skills: civil engineering
students are trained to find problems and solutions quickly. They are required
to find practical and applicable solutions.
• Project management and organizational
skills: civil engineering students can predict and calculate budgets quickly.
• IT skills: civil engineering students are
familiar with complex software to help with building design, calculations, and
so on.
• Creative: Civil engineering graduates must
continue to improvise and be creative in providing solutions. Creative ideas
make them produce better buildings than before.
• Communication and negotiation skills: able
to explain technical terms to clients and other team members.
• Ability to work in groups and work
independently if needed.
CIVIL ENGINEERING BRANCHES
1. Construction Management
This branch studies management in construction
work, for example, managing costs or finances, managing construction time so
that it is completed on time, and other things related to management in
planning a building. From this program, development project
managers/construction companies were born.
2. Geotechnical
Geotechnical studies the structure on which a
building is erected in detail. For example, soil condition is one of the
influencing factors in a development project. Geotechnical experts analyze soil
properties and determine whether the soil in a place is good and
suitable for constructing a building.
3. Transportation
Civil engineering students are also equipped
with transportation system knowledge, including planning and its application in
life. It is intended that civil engineering graduates have knowledge that can
be applied in the construction of toll roads, highways, airport construction,
port construction, and other transportation facilities.
4. Hydrology/Hydraulics
Civil engineering students also learn about
water. This hydraulics lesson covers distribution, problems, handling, and
control of waters. This knowledge will later be applied in development related
to water structures such as reservoirs, dams, and ports. In addition, this
science is also used for irrigation and urban drainage.
5. Building Structure
It discusses building materials, for example,
glass, wood, steel, concrete, and others. This discussion aims to make civil
engineering students know what the properties of building materials are good
and suitable to be used as construction materials.
The infrastructure is continuously built to
improve the comfort of people's lives. Therefore, there are always job
vacancies for civil engineering majors. According to the latest data from the
American Bureau of Labor, the annual salary of those in civil engineering
careers ranges from $68,220 - $82,220. The following are some examples of civil
engineering jobs:
1. Building Construction Consultant /
Contractor
Graduates majoring in civil engineering can
work in the field of building construction, for example in positions as
structural engineer, site engineer, drafter, and estimator.
2. Development programs or projects
Civil engineering students will be able to
work on a development plan, such as roads, toll roads, bridges, hospitals,
dams, and others. Our country is one of the countries that is still
intensifying development, so being a civil engineering student and later
participating in a career in the construction of facilities is a good
opportunity.
3. Civil Servants (PNS)
Government agencies also need civil
engineering graduates. For example, agencies and agencies such as the
regional planning agency, PMU-Bina Marga, hospitals, the Department of Energy
and Mineral Resources, the city planning and landscaping offices.
. State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN)
Some SOEs also provide vacancies for
engineering graduates, for example in Cipta Karya (Planning), Waskita Karya
(Building), Hutama Karya (Roads and Bridges), and other SOEs.
5. Construction Engineer
A construction engineer is responsible for the
design, management, and supervision of various construction projects, be it
building projects, roads, bridges, waterways, sewage systems, etc. where the
building should be built. In addition, construction engineers must also predict
problems that may arise in the next few years after the building is finished,
and how to solve them. In their work, construction engineers will work closely
with architects, construction managers, planning departments, and surveyors.
6. Structural Engineer
Generally,
a structural engineer acts as a consultant to architects and contractors. After
an architect has finished designing a building, a structural engineer will make a number
of calculations and estimates, such as what building materials will be
used, estimate the durability of building materials
(eg in extreme weather such as snow, summer), then discuss with other team
members, such as engineers. building materials and environmentalists.
Structural engineers also deal with building demolitions, or building
maintenance. During and after the building is built, the structural engineer
will visit the site to make sure everything is going according
to the procedures and steps specified.
7. Building Control Surveyor
The responsibility of this profession is to
ensure that all building projects comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Testing the durability of foundations, building materials, drainage, and other
inspections is also the responsibility of the building control surveyor. If a
project does not meet the criteria stated in the regulations and laws, the
building control surveyor needs to provide a solution, taking into account the budget
and possible delays. They will also be asked to survey buildings damaged by
natural disasters, and provide solutions on how to rebuild, or repair.
8. Aquatic Resources Engineer
This profession is responsible for building
water supply facilities. In designing aquatic systems, they must consider the
design, management, and maintenance of the system (underground wells, natural
springs). This profession ensures that the surrounding community can obtain
hygienic and contamination-free water resources. In their work, the water
resource engineer works closely with the structural engineer to obtain
information on the construction of dams or other water structures.
9. Building Maintenance Engineer
This
profession takes care of the design, installation, and maintenance of all the
services needed for a building to function properly, be it lighting, electric
power, water, security systems, emergency systems, and so on.
10. General Field
Civil engineering graduates still have various
alternatives, for example, they can work in state-owned enterprises that are
not related to the construction industry for development, such as Telkom and
PLN. The work carried out by civil engineering graduates at this company is for
example in telecommunications tower infrastructure and dams for power plants.
Private companies can also be a place to work for civil engineering graduates,
including oil and mining companies.

banyak hal, seperti gedung perkantoran, jembatan, jalan raya, bandara, stasiun,
struktur bangunan, fondasi, struktur tanah, bangunan air, karakteristik laut
dan pesisir, transportasi, lalu lintas, perhitungan biaya, perencanaan proyek,
dan sebagainya. Fokus studi yang ditawarkan jurusan Teknik Sipil antara lain;
Geoteknik, Struktur Bangunan, Hidro (Keairan), Transportasi, Lingkungan, dll.
Raya, Struktur Baja, Struktur Beton Bertulang, Pelabuhan Udara, Pelabuhan Laut,
Manajemen Alat Berat, Rekayasa Irigasi dan Bangunan Air, Geologi Rekayasa, Ilmu
Ukur Tanah, dll.
mempertimbangkan berbagai aspek (ekonomi, keselamatan, kesehatan kerja,
sustainability, dan lingkungan).
Keahlian Yang Akan Dipelajari Dari Jurusan
Teknik Sipil
• Selain

proyek pembangunan/perusahaan konstruksi.
2. Geoteknik
Geoteknik mempelajari struktur tempat
Transportasi
Mahasiwa teknik sipil juga dibekali dengan
ilmu sistem transportasi, termasuk
4. Stuktur
